EU REACH Compliance for Funeral Products: Full Guide

Everything funeral homes, distributors and importers need to know about EU REACH and CLP regulations when sourcing coffins in Europe.

Regulation references: EU REACH EC 1907/2006 and EU CLP EC 1272/2008

What is EU REACH and Why Does It Apply to Coffins?

REACH — Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals — is the EU's primary regulation governing chemical substances. It applies to any article manufactured, imported, or sold in the EU that contains chemical substances above defined thresholds.

Coffins fall under REACH because:

  • Surface lacquers, paints, and polyurethane coatings contain chemical substances requiring SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) assessment
  • Adhesives used in MDF assembly may contain formaldehyde-releasing compounds
  • Metal fittings and handles may include chromium-VI compounds (a listed SVHC)
  • Fabric linings and interior materials may contain restricted dyes or flame retardants

REACH Obligations by Role

Manufacturer (in EU)

  • Register all chemical substances used above 1 tonne/year with ECHA
  • Prepare Safety Data Sheets for all chemical substances
  • Assess SVHC presence in articles above 0.1% w/w
  • Communicate SVHC information to customers

Importer (into EU)

  • Same registration obligations as EU manufacturers
  • Ensure all imported articles are SVHC-free above 0.1%
  • Request compliance documentation from non-EU suppliers
  • Do not import articles containing restricted substances

Distributor / Funeral Home

  • Pass SVHC information to professional customers on request
  • Verify compliance certificates from your supplier
  • Keep records of chemical safety documentation

CLP Regulation: What It Means for Coffin Buyers

The CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) aligns EU rules on classification, labelling and packaging of chemical products with international GHS standards. For coffin buyers, CLP is relevant when:

  • Receiving lacquered or painted coffins — the supplier must classify and label any potentially hazardous chemical treatments
  • Storing or handling chemical products used in coffin preparation (embalming, etc.)
  • Shipping coffins that have been treated with hazardous surface coatings internationally

Document Checklist: What to Request from Your Supplier

REACH compliance declaration (company letterhead)
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for each lacquer/coating type
SVHC substance declaration (confirmation no SVHC > 0.1%)
Formaldehyde emission class for MDF (E1 standard or better)
Chromium-VI testing certificate for metal fittings
CLP hazard classification for any finishing chemicals
For cremation coffins: combustion materials certification

Nova Coffin Compliance

All Nova Coffin products are manufactured with full EU REACH and CLP compliance. We supply SDS sheets for postformed PS.71.00 polyurethane lacquer (VOC: 456 g/L), formaldehyde-free adhesive documentation, and SVHC declaration with every wholesale order.

FAQ

Are coffins subject to EU REACH regulations?

Yes. Coffins manufactured or imported into the EU are subject to REACH because the materials used — lacquers, paints, adhesives, sealants — contain chemical substances. Manufacturers must ensure no SVHC are present above 0.1% in the final article.

What documents should a REACH-compliant coffin supplier provide?

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all coating materials; REACH compliance declaration; CLP hazard classification for finishing chemicals; and SVHC substance declaration confirming no restricted substances above 0.1% threshold.

Do cremation coffins have additional compliance requirements?

Yes. Cremation coffins must use combustible materials only — no metal fittings, no PVC, no halogenated compounds. Verify that MDF is formaldehyde-compliant and that lacquers are low-VOC and combustion-safe.
