Coffin Packaging & Shipping Wholesale Europe — Complete Logistics Guide
Coffin wholesale logistics is more complex than standard freight due to size, fragility and compliance requirements. This guide covers everything a funeral home or distributor needs to know about wholesale coffin packaging, shipping methods, transit times across Europe, and what to check on delivery.
Standard Wholesale Coffin Packaging
Each coffin manufactured for wholesale export is individually packaged with corner protection (minimum 25mm PE foam corners), side bubble wrap or blanket wrap, stretch film wrapping, and cardboard or corrugated board outer layer. The packaged unit is then placed on an EUR pallet (80×120cm) and secured with polyester strapping. Standard pallet capacity: 4–6 coffins depending on model size. Pallets are shrink-wrapped before dispatch. For premium models, wooden crates are available at additional cost.
Transit Damage Prevention
The most common damage types during coffin transit are: corner impact (addressed by foam corner protectors), surface scratching (addressed by blanket wrapping), humidity damage affecting MDF core (addressed by vapour barrier film in humid transit routes). Nova Coffin's packaging standards have resulted in a damage rate below 0.3% of shipped units across 4 years of EU-wide wholesale distribution. All shipments are covered by cargo insurance at full replacement value — included in DDP price.
Road Freight: Transit Times from Portugal
Standard road freight transit times from Torres Vedras, Portugal to major European destinations: France 3–4 business days, Germany 5–6 days, Netherlands 4–5 days, Belgium 4–5 days, Spain 2–3 days, Italy 4–5 days, Poland 6–7 days, Romania 7–8 days, UK 5–6 days (including Dover/Calais crossing), Greece 7–9 days. All transit times are for groupage (LCL) shipments. FTL (full truck load) shipments may have slightly different routing and timing.
Customs and Documentation for Non-EU Buyers
EU buyers receive intra-EU shipments — no customs required. For the UK, Switzerland and non-EU buyers, the DDP shipment includes: EUR.1 or REX movement certificate confirming EU origin, commercial invoice with HS code 9403.89 (coffins), packing list, REACH compliance documentation, and for UK: UK import customs entry filed by our customs agent. Non-EU buyers should verify their local import duty rate for HS 9403.89 — in most countries, coffins have a 0% or low duty rate due to their sensitive nature.
What to Check When Your Coffin Delivery Arrives
Upon delivery of a wholesale coffin order, follow this inspection procedure: (1) Count units against the packing list before signing the delivery receipt. (2) Inspect outer packaging for damage before opening — photograph any damaged packaging. (3) Open and inspect a sample of 10–20% of units for surface scratches, corner damage, or finish defects. (4) Check that all compliance documentation is included in the shipment (usually in a sealed envelope attached to the first pallet). (5) Report any discrepancies or damages within 48 hours of delivery — claims made after this window may not be accepted. Nova Coffin's defect replacement window is 14 days from delivery, documented with photographs.
